Seafood Restaurants in Istanbul

If you’re in Istanbul and seafood is on your mind, you’re in the right place. The city’s connection to both the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara means fresh, flavorful fish is never far away. Istanbul’s fish restaurants range from humble street-side stands near Karaköy to classic meyhane taverns in Kadıköy, where the fish is grilled simply and served with rakı and lots of laughter.

One of my favorite things to do is swing by the fish market early in the morning around the Galata Bridge. You’ll see fishermen unloading their catches and can even grab a balik ekmek (fish sandwich) there,it’s salty, juicy, and so genuine you can’t find anything like it anywhere else. Don’t overlook meaty sea bass and the sweet calamari, which come alive in these kitchens.

A quick tip: go for restaurants in Arnavutköy on the European side or Moda on the Asian side when the weather’s nice. Both offer waterfront seating with views you won’t forget and a different vibe after sunset. But if you want a more local experience, try an off-the-beaten-track meyhane in Balat, where seafood is paired with plain but excellent homemade sides.
