Sometimes the best travel experiences happen because somebody takes the time to leave a comment. After one of my Istanbul posts, a well-travelled friend suggested I try a traditional Turkish hamam before leaving Türkiye. I replied that I simply didn’t have time. Four hours before I needed to be at the airport, the concierge smiled and pointed down the street. “Just 150 metres away.” @cagalogluhamam Challenge accepted. What followed was one of the most extraordinary sensory experiences of my travels. The building itself is over 300 years old. Before you even begin, the architecture takes your breath away. Domes punctuated with tiny windows. Marble everywhere. The sound of running water echoing through cavernous spaces. It feels more like stepping into history than entering a spa. I chose the “Istanbul Dream” experience and added a detoxifying organic clay mask. Yes, it was expensive. And yes, it was worth every cent. Without giving away too much of the experience (because half the magic is discovering it yourself), there were hot marble rooms, bubble massages that felt like being wrapped in clouds, clay treatments, continual rinsing, and moments lying on warm stone staring up at centuries-old ceilings while water splashed gently around me. For a little while, the outside world simply disappeared. A special mention to Hasret, whose quiet professionalism and gentle care helped make the experience feel both luxurious and deeply personal. And then there was the hospitality. Tea and snacks while waiting. Turkish tea, homemade sherbet and Turkish delight at the end. Everything provided - towels, pestemal cloth, disposable slippers, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and traditional Ayvalık olive oil soap. The Turkish seem to understand something many cultures have forgotten. Looking after people is an art form. And at Cagaloglu Hamam, they’ve been perfecting it for more than three centuries. First time in a Turkish Hammam. Fantastic experience in beautiful Ottoman surroundings. Cagaloglu is an excellent Hammam for an authentic and first time experience. Clean, professional, friendly and peaceful. My attendant was Nusret , he made me feel like a new man. Fresh, clean with silky smooth skin.
Managed to get a last minute booking. Was receieved well. First time at a hamam, i expected the sauna to be abit hotter. The building was alittle ancient i dont know if renovating would make it lose its touch. The wash was a little rough i expected it to be gentle ? Will have to give it another try to see what to expect. The foam massage was surprisingly good. Liked the experience generally. Please replenish the hair products. I expected local oils rather than the nivea lotion that was given.
It was the first experience in a turkish Hamam. We have chisen this historical place to have the chance to remember. And it will be. GREAT. From the reception to the changing room, from the sauna to the massage, from the relax area to the beverage service everything is accurate and all the details are prepared. Well done. We love it and will remember. Why not 5 stars? Becauce the ceiling at the entrance is in bad condition and need attention ( it is the first impression and it was not really positive) and because I had the impression of a bit of rush from the staff to finish quick (understand, there were persons waiting to enter.,.)
My first experience in a hamam, and Cagaloglu made it wonderful. I was able to get an appointment the day before since I was free for any spot, but it is suggested to book ahead if you need a specific time. The person at the reception desk walked me through the entire process and I never felt rushed. My therapist was so sweet and even though there was a bit of a language barrier, she made it easy to relax and enjoy the experience. Once my treatment was finished, I sat in the lounge enjoying the tea, sherbet, and Turkish delights (pic of women’s lounge attached). As others have mentioned, there’s no “good bye” but I was okay with that. Got dressed in my room at my own pace and saw myself out. Would recommend to anyone looking for an easy first time experience or just want to treat yourself to something truly special!
