Description

The Basilica Cistern was originally constructed in the 4th century and expanded in 532 AD during Emperor Justinian I’s reign. This vast Byzantine-era underground reservoir supplied water to the Great Palace through 20 kilometers of aqueducts connected to a reservoir near the Black Sea.

Descend fifty-two stone steps into the cistern’s chamber, surrounded by a 4-meter-thick firebrick wall coated with waterproof mortar. Inside, explore a forest of marble columns and the famous Medusa heads inspired by Greek mythology. An optional audio guide is available in 25 languages for detailed information throughout your visit.

The cistern stores up to 80,000 cubic meters of water, supplied via the 971-meter Valens Aqueduct and the 115-meter Mağlova Aqueduct, both constructed under Justinian’s rule. Water reaches the cistern from the Eğrikapı Water Distribution Center in the Belgrade Forest.

The Basilica Cistern is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Visitors with standard entry tickets can explore independently, or join a guided tour available every day except Friday at 10:30 and 16:30. Guided tours begin at Roots and Roasted Cafe; meet your guide 15 minutes early, who will be holding a purple and fuchsia umbrella for easy identification.
