Description
Begin your time in Istanbul with a guided introduction to the Historic Peninsula, where many of the city’s most important Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks stand within walking distance of one another.
Instead of entering individual monuments without understanding their wider history, join a 90-minute orientation walk that connects the stories, locations and civilizations behind Istanbul’s Old City. Gain a clearer understanding of how Constantinople developed into modern-day Istanbul and learn how the area’s most famous attractions relate to one another.
Meet your licensed guide beside the German Fountain in Sultanahmet Square and begin with an introduction to the geography and historical timeline of the city.
Continue through the former Hippodrome of Constantinople, once the sporting, political and social center of the Byzantine capital. Hear about chariot races, the Blues and Greens, the Nika Revolt and the imperial ceremonies that once filled the square. See the Egyptian Obelisk, Serpent Column and Walled Obelisk while learning why these ancient monuments were placed here.
Admire the Blue Mosque from the outside and discover the story of Sultan Ahmed I, its six minarets and the role of imperial mosque complexes in Ottoman society. Your guide will also share useful information for a future visit to this active place of worship.
Outside the Basilica Cistern, learn how the Roman and Byzantine water system supplied Constantinople and why underground reservoirs were essential to the city’s survival.
Continue to Hagia Sophia and explore the story of Emperor Justinian, its vast central dome and its transformation from an imperial cathedral into an Ottoman mosque. This stop provides historical and architectural context without entering the monument.
Walk into the public First Courtyard of Topkapı Palace, which does not require an admission ticket. Learn how the palace served as the residence of the Ottoman sultans and the administrative center of the empire. Hear about palace ceremonies, the Imperial Council, the Harem and what can be seen inside the ticketed sections.
Stop outside the Istanbul Archaeological Museums and discover why the complex is particularly valuable for visitors interested in Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, Anatolian and Ottoman history.
Finish the tour in Gülhane Park, once part of the outer palace gardens. Learn about its relationship with Topkapı Palace, its transformation into a public park and its connection to the Tanzimat period.
Before the experience ends, receive recommendations for museums, monuments, cafés, restaurants, scenic streets, sunset locations and nearby activities. You will also have time to ask your guide questions about how to continue exploring Istanbul.
