Finish your tour at the Egyptian Bazaar (Spice Bazaar)-one of Istanbul's most famous traditional markets, located in the Eminönü district, close to the Yeni Camii (New Mosque) and the Galata Bridge. Constructed in the Ottoman era of the 17th century, it initially flourished thanks to the spice trade, hence it is also known as the Spice Market.
The Egyptian Bazaar was built during the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century and opened in 1663. Originally constructed as part of the Yeni Mosque (New Mosque), it was intended to fund the mosque's operations. Why is it called the 'Egyptian Bazaar'? At that time, the Ottoman Empire ruled Egypt. Large quantities of spices, coffee, medicinal herbs and oriental goods sold at the bazaar were shipped to Istanbul via Egypt, hence the Turkish name Mısır Çarşısı (Egyptian Bazaar). In Turkish, the word 'Mısır' means 'Egypt' and also references this historical source of trade.
Hundreds of years ago, this was where Istanbul smelled like the East. Spices from Egypt, India and the Silk Road arrived here before reaching European markets.
